However, there may be significant risks associated with clinicians missing an underlying autism presentation, particularly if this leads to unnecessary medicalised treatment of a misdiagnosed alternate mental illness such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (Au-Yeung et al., 2019 ; Luciano et al., 2014 ; Van Schalkwyk et al., 2015 ).
