2 Even though there may be significant impacts of these experiences, including grief, compassion fatigue, diminished psychological and physical health, and healthcare workforce stability. 3 Furthermore, patient outcomes are impacted by both workforce turnover and HCWs whose grief has gone unacknowledged and/or unaddressed. 4 - 6 Grief is considered a universal human experience and an expected reaction to loss. 7 For HCWs, grief may be experienced not only due to the loss of a patient but also due to observing suffering and losses related to illness.
