This study found that the association between DII scores and periodontitis was not entirely significant from the perspective of cross-sectional survey (the risk of periodontitis between male participants with the DII score in Quartile 2 and Quartile 1: OR = 1.26, 95%CI: 0.99–1.62; the risk of periodontitis between female participants with the DII score in Quartile 4 and Quartile 1: OR = 1.13, 95%CI: 0.96–1.33), but were both significant in long-term follow-up, which was stronger than the cross-sectional evidence.
