An increase in photocurrent was observed with an increasing amount of cells, reaching a maximum photocurrent response when a concentration of 3.0×10 6 cells mL –1 was used for electrode modification. This amount was selected as the optimum for biophotoelectrode fabrication. For higher concentrations, a decreasing trend in photocurrent response was observed, most likely due to a blocking of the electrode surface at high cell loadings, preventing a sufficient and homogeneous arrival of light to other immobilized cells and the underlying semiconductor/PDA material, consequently leading to a decrease in photocurrent.
