In recent years, there has been an increasing trend of patients with dementia being admitted to psychiatric hospitals and remaining there until death. 16 , 17 We hypothesized that the low proportion of deaths attributed to dementia in Japanese mortality statistics may be due to the omission of AD and other dementias in the direct cause of death section on death certificates.
