Drawing on phenotypes of nhx1Δ yeast, we were compelled to ask: how does NHE6 loss mediate neurodegeneration? Curiously, we found a highly significant and specific coexpression of NHE6 with the APP (amyloid precursor protein) in the human brain, suggesting a functional link that demanded further investigation (Prasad and Rao 2015b ).
