As shown in Table 4 , the heavy sand mineral fractions in the Tigris and Euphrates River sediments consisted of opaque minerals, chlorite, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, hornblende, glaucophane, micas (biotite, muscovite), zircon, tourmaline, rutile, garnet, epidote, staurolite, and kyanite. Opaque minerals ranged from 32.4 to 42.6%, with a higher percentage in the Tigris River than in the Euphrates River and a decreasing trend as the distance along the rivers increased.
