In terms of annual percentage changes in country-level estimates, DALYs for CVD due to high BMI showed an increasing trend in 99 countries, a decreasing trend in 85 countries, and remained stable in the others from 1990–2021, with the most pronounced increase in the rate of DALYs occurring in Zimbabwe 6.50 (95 % CI: 5.46, 7.56), followed by Bangladesh 4.96 (95 %CI: 4.56, 5.36) and Viet Nam 4.30 (95 %CI:3.68, 4.92), which also increased rapidly, and the countries with a more pronounced decrease in the rate of DALYs were Luxembourg −4.68 (95 %CI:−5.03, −4.33), Switzerland −4.2 (95 %CI: −4.48, −3.92) and Norway −4.05 (95 %CI: −4.32, −3.77) ( Fig. 2 A).
