To determine how contamination influenced the number of differentially abundant taxa, we quantified the proportion of significant hits that were contaminants, borderline significant (false discovery rate-corrected P value [FDR] between 0.05 and 0.1 in the uncontaminated data set), or random (FDR > 0.1 in the uncontaminated data set).
