Within the San Juan River sediments, Pb contribution from upstream mining is detectable and constitutes a significant fraction of the Pb contained within bed sediments, although Pb concentrations are below aquatic risk levels. Broadly consistent source attribution results observed over several decades and the asymptotic concentration trend with distance from the headwaters region suggest that the Pb background may be significant and variable in space.
