A total of 53% of all mCpol systems are encoded in genomes also coding for systems centred on SMODS-domain enzymes (cGAS/DncV-like nucleotidyltransferases (CD-NTases)), a highly significant linkage ( P = 3.7 × 10 −12 ) indicative of functional coupling between them (Fig. 5b and Extended Data Fig. 9b,c ).
