Animal studies have shown that the VNS may be a crucial communication pathway for FMT and that sigma-1 receptors (Sig-1R) and NLRP3 inflammasomes, which mediate neurochemical effects, may be significant targets for FMT efficacy. 49 , 50 Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that FMT markedly alleviates depression symptoms and effectively treats recurrent Clostridium difficile infections. 51–53 However, despite being less invasive, the long-term safety of FMT (eg, risks of infection and metabolic abnormalities) remains uncertain, and the lack of standardized clinical protocols limits its current application.
