Sedimentary archives from the ECS reveal a striking divergence: while δ 13 C org exhibits an increasing trend, 10 of 13 cores show coherent declines in δ 15 N from the early 1900s to present, with an average rate of −1.09 ± 0.48‰ per century (Supplementary Figs. 8 and 9a–b ).
