Notably, epidemiological studies have revealed an increasing trend in CRC incidence and mortality among younger populations, statistical projections indicate that by 2030, ~33% of colorectal cancer cases will occur in individuals <50 years of age ( 3 – 5 ), which is mainly associated with changes in dietary habits, environmental factors and unhealthy lifestyle choices, such as smoking, alcohol consumption and lack of exercise ( 6 – 9 ).
