Through these mechanisms, hTERT plays an essential role in maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis, which may be significant in the context of cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, or infertility treatment [ 88 ]. hTERT contributes to drug resistance in cancer cells by protecting mitochondrial DNA and reducing oxidative stress, thereby promoting cell survival.
