In particular, a meta-analysis of observational studies including 19,137 participants found that individuals with hypomagnesemia have a higher risk of depression (pooled RR 1.34, 95% CI 1.01–1.79) compared to those with normal magnesium levels, although sensitivity analyses showed marginal significance when restricted to cohort and case-control studies [ 131 ].
