Indeed although all the statistical tests (Fisher's exact test, P < 0.05, FDR corrected) performed in the case of external hubs were highly significant considering all the 38 areas analysed and both the definitions of hub described in the Methods section, the analysis performed in the case of internal hubs yielded significant results only for 12 out of 31 (7 areas had no hubs) using the percentage method, and only for 20 out of 38 using the percentile method ( Supporting Information , sheet ‘ Hub Statistics ’).
