The preoperative information may not be significant to a patient unless it concerns surgery and meets his or her information needs directly: ‘need is a requirement of the patient which, if supplied, relieves or diminishes his immediate distress or improves his immediate sense of adequacy or well-being’ (p. 287) [ 2 ].
