While we found no significant correlation between these variables within basal synapsids, R 2 values increased across all tested clades when shape PCs 1–5 were substituted for shape coordinates, resulting in a strong and highly significant correlation between shape and function for this group (in addition to significant correlations for every other tested taxonomic grouping).
