Importantly, the process of acculturation itself may be significant as it is typically those individuals who find themselves simultaneously distanced from both the majority culture and their parents’ culture of origin—often second-generation immigrants—who are found to be at higher risk of suicide ( Berry & Sabatier, 2010 ; Di Thiene et al., 2015 ; Hjern & Allebeck, 2002 ; Law et al., 2014 ; Portes & Zhou, 1993 ).
