In a French nationwide healthcare database sample of 3853 breast cancer patients, radiotherapy-treated patients had 28 permanent pacemaker implantations compared with 13 expected cases, corresponding to a standardized incidence ratio of 2.18, although the direct comparison with non-irradiated breast cancer patients was only borderline significant [ 193 ].
