These results suggest that environmental noise exacerbates the natural progression of age-related hearing loss, a phenomenon previously described by Kujawa and Liberman (2006), by causing substantial, ongoing deterioration of cochlear neural responses without additional change in preneural responses, accompanied by histologic evidence of primary neural degeneration throughout the cochlea.[ 14 ] The highly significant P values (<0.001 for right and left ear in powerloom residents) further reinforce the synergistic effect of noise and ageing on hearing impairment.
