4 , 5 Previous studies have shown that local disease recurrence at least 2 years post-radical therapy is associated with a highly significant increased risk of metastatic disease and prostate cancer-related mortality after median follow-up of around 10 years. 3 Although a 2-year biopsy is not part of standard clinical practice, it has previously been used as a gold standard research tool in clinical trials of radiation therapy with curative intent. 26 , 27 Histological changes precede clinical evidence of recurrence.
