Four of the most common Salmonella serotypes isolated from swine are on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) list of top 10 human isolates (122). The risk of salmonellosis in occupational settings may be significant considering the presence of published reports of disease after occupational contacts (78,123,124), the prevalence of the organism in swine wastes (84% in some herds) (122,125-127), and the ability of this organism to survive in liq- uid slurry systems for months (128).
