Mantel tests [ 27 ] of the significance of correlations between matrices of (i) pairwise population differentiation at the LWS locus, (ii) pairwise difference in water transparency, and (iii) pairwise geographical distance, revealed a highly significant positive correlation between LWS divergence and transparency (cross matrix correlation 0.80, p = 0.0008), but only a weak correlation between LWS divergence and geographical distance (0.55, p = 0.04), and an even weaker correlation between transparency and geographical distance (0.42, p = 0.08).
