Bidirectional transcription is an inherent feature of Giardia lamblia promoters and contributes to an abundance of sterile antisense transcripts throughout the genome.

Additionally, we show generation of upstream and divergently oriented transcripts from the alpha-2 tubulin promoter ( Figure 4 B), indicating that bidirectional promoters might be significant contributors to not only antisense, but also sterile transcripts in the cell in non-coding regions.
