Positive oestrogen recep- tor status has previously been shown to associate with low histological grade (McCarty et al., 1980; Hawkins et al., 1987) but correlations with tumour size are not well recog- nised: in the current series the correlation between oestrogen receptor status and tumour grade fell short of significance, but there was a significant association between positive oest- rogen receptor status and smaller tumour size (data not shown).
