Similar differences were shown for each sex separately and the greater increase in risk in the in-patient group may be attributed to the greater risk of infection in institutions compared with individual homes. For leukaemia, the mortality was 18 times the expected and the difference between the observed and expected numbers of deaths is highly significant.
