ences in the incidence of cells with particles in various Rous ascites tumours were studied in parallel with the biological activity of the virus contained in these tumours (Epstein, 1956). The correlation between the results of the morphological and the biological experiments was statistically highly significant and, when taken in conjunction with the size, appearance and osmiophilia of the particles made it possible to identify the latter as the Rous virus.
