In any event, the elucidation of the regulatory elements that control transcription of the TGF-beta gene is a problem of paramount importance. We have stressed the importance of TGF-beta in repair of tissue damage, and this suggests that there may be significant interactions between TGF-beta and another system that ap- pears to be intimately involved in repair of cellular damage, namely the family of heat shock proteins (28, 52, 62).
