The difficulty with so sim- ple a view is that since we have more apparently mono-cis retinenes than the simple theory encompasses, a new theory may be needed; and this could in- volve new considerations which affect the height of the cis peak. It may be significant, particularly in association with other characteristics to be discussed below, that in the ultraviolet the isoretinenes have a some- what different type of spectrum from the other isomers.
