The IL-6 gene can be expressed in a wide range of cell types, including fibroblasts, endothelial cells, endometrial stromal cells, keratinocytes, monocytes/macrophages, and also in avariety oftumor cells. Whereas it is clear that IL-6 has highly significant effects on the expression of differentiated functions and on differentiation of cells of nonimmune and immune systems (2-13), its effects on cell proliferation mainly involve either stimulation or suppression oftheproliferation ofcertain kinds of cells in which the genetic control ofgrowth has been altered.
