Although it is not known whether the latter route transits late endosomes or is direct to lysosomes, this distinction may not be significant because late endosomes fuse with lysosomes ( Luzio et al., 2000 ), and the two compartments are thought to be in a dynamic equilibrium ( Mellman, 1996 ).
