This is in very good agreement with estimates of the number of transport sites derived from measurements of the effects of DIDS (Ship et al., 1977) or other inhibitors (Zaki et al., 1975; Lepke et al., 1976; see summary in Knauf, 1979) on chloride or sulfate exchange fluxes and suggests strongly that iodide and chloride share a common exchange pathway, as would be expected sinceiodide is acompetitive inhibitor ofchloride exchange (Dalmark, 1976). For the other halides (Table I), the difference between the net flux in the presence and absence of DIDS is highly significant (P < 0.02) .
