However, there was evidence of an overall trend of fewer adaptive mutations in the harsh condition (Tables 2 and 3 ), suggesting that the lower levels of CI in the harsh environment may have been due to the lower number of available adaptive solutions, which would increase the waiting time for beneficial mutations and decrease their co-occurrence [ 3 , 12 , 16 , 17 ].
