Mirroring results from a comparison of human-mouse orthologues [ 2 ], we found strong and highly significant positive correlations of strikingly linear character (Figure 4 ) between distance from the boundary and amino acid substitution rate for the Drosophila and Caenorhabditis pairs, whilst proximity to the boundary did not appear to confer a higher level of amino acid conservation in the Saccharomyces comparison.
