There may be significant advantages of receiving thalidomide for maintenance therapy after transplantation: resistance may be avoided; the risk of thromboembolism can be reduced, since this risk is highest during induction therapy; and the incidence of neurotoxic effects should be reduced with the later introduction of thalidomide at lower doses (50 to 100 mg) during maintenance therapy.
