Analysis of the role of 13 major fimbrial subunits in colonisation of the chicken intestines by Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis reveals a role for a novel locus.

No significant difference existed between the caecal loads of the Δ pegA :: cat and Δ pegA mutants ( P values 0.27 and 0.64 at 1 and 3 days post-inoculation, respectively); however in both cases a highly significant reduction in caecal load was detected for each mutant relative to the parent strain ( P values < 0.0001 at 1 day post-infection), consistent with previous findings.
