The increased HIV seroprevalence in older women and men may represent a cohort effect (i.e., the higher prevalence in younger women in the 1997 survey are now reflected in the cohort almost 10 years older), or could alternatively demonstrate a worrying trend towards increased HIV seroconversion in this age group.
