The biggest evidence for safety is probably related to the lack of aspiration related morbidity in recent years, 7 in spite of an increasing trend to feeding in labour over the past decades. 9 10 Aspiration pneumonitis/pneumonia is significantly associated with intubation and ventilation. 33 In modern obstetric practice it is the use of regional anaesthesia, thereby avoiding intubation, rather then fasting regimens that is likely to have reduced mortality from aspiration.
