Discussion We found that the basic graph theory method we used to identify neighbourhoods which were surrounded by varying levels of deprivation showed that there was some evidence of a trend towards higher mortality in neighbourhoods surrounded by deprived areas, although this was of borderline significance (p = 0.07).
