It may be significant that the Foxp3-expressing population is only one of the players in the system, and we cannot yet distinguish whether ‘natural’ and ‘adaptive’ Treg expand independently in the context of this infection, or the evolution of the adaptive phenotype is dependent upon the pre-existing natural Treg population.
