Our major findings were 1) vancomycin was not associated with VRE positivity, a finding consistent with the results of the meta-analysis on this subject (20) ; 2) third-generation cephalosporins and parenteral metronidazole were highly significant independent risk factors for VRE; and 3) only fluoroquinolones exhibited a statistically significant linear relationship between intensity (duration) of exposure and risk for VRE.
