Experiments with Deletion Mutants Suggest that VCC Is the Factor Causing an Inflammatory Response in Epithelial Cells and that PrtV Is the Major Factor Causing Its Inactivation Tight monolayers challenged with BHI broth supernatants from the VCC deletion mutant ( Δvcc ; Table 1 ) and the PrtV/VCC double deletion mutant ( ΔprtV/Δvcc ; Table 1 ) retained the same high TER as the BHI broth control while tight monolayers incubated with supernatants from ΔprtV showed a highly significant decrease in TER ( Fig. 2a ).
