Comparison of different regions of Rag1 The 5' and 3'-ends of the gene differ in terms of genetic diversity, with the 5' significantly more variable than the 3', across all vertebrates (Table 6 ) as well as within single vertebrate lineages, with the exception of the number of variable nucleotide sites for Aves, Lepidosauria (but for these two groups the p-value is very close to significance), Mammalia, and Testudines (Table 7 ).
