While the difference in the rate of prosthetic infection between the groups was not quite statistically significant ( p = 0.06; Fisher’s exact test), further exploration of the reasons for the disproportionately high rate of infection in the Charnley group revealed that the mean operating time was longer in the infected group (83 versus 68 min; p = 0.065) and the patients that became infected were significantly older (71.2 versus 65.4 years, p = 0.035) than the patients who did not become infected.
