Considering the practical implications of satellite-cell pool depletion with age, we identify two cases in which the depleted pool may be significant: (i) when satellite cells are heterogeneous in their ability to produce myogenic progeny and to self-renew; (ii) when each myofiber depends on its own satellite cells.
