The finding of higher platelet count and fibrinogen concentration, with an elevated trend even at baseline, is consistent with the presence of infection. 22 Griessenhammer et al. found that infection was the second most common cause of thrombocytosis in a study of 732 patients who were found to have an elevated (>500 × 10 9 L ‐1 ) platelet count in their hospital.
