7 “The interactions between cadmium and other minerals may be significant in terms of influencing the toxicity of cadmium,” says Fowler. “Such interactions include zinc’s induction of metallothionein, thus reducing the bioavailability of cadmium, and zinc and selenium’s ability to attenuate the formation of cadmium-induced reactive oxygen species.” Reducing the intestinal absorption of cadmium, he adds, can be best achieved through a balanced iron status.
