The potential side effects of excessive neurotrophin treatment, as may occur with pump-based systems, is currently unknown, but may be significant since, in addition to neuronal survival and differentiation effects, neurotrophins can also elicit changes in ion channel properties and neurotransmitter release, and are important in modulating activity-dependent neuronal plasticity that is essential for the functional and structural refinement of neuronal circuits [60] , [61] .
